Shri Vayalar Ravi Minister for Overseas Indian Affairs who is currently on a 5-day tour to Australia had high level meetings with Mr. Simon Crean, Minister for Trade, Senator Chris Evans, Minister for Immigration and Citizenship, Mr. Stephen Smith, Foreign Minister and Mr. Martin Ferguson, Minister for Resources and Energy and Tourism of Australia. He discussed various bilateral issues and issues relating to Indian diaspora.
The meetings hold high significance in view of the recent proposed changes in Australia’s migration rules. Since there is a large number of affected Indian population, especially the students who had come under the previous Immigration Rules, in Australia, the Indian Government will be trying to seek appropriate transitional arrangements as part of this new policy. During his meetings, Shri. Ravi has impressed upon the Australian side that the proposed changes should be effected prospectively and not retrospectively.
Shri Ravi also met the Premier of Victoria State, Mr. John Brumby, in Melbourne and has discussed with him the possibilities of the Victoria State helping in finding employment under the State sponsored Immigration and also issues related to police action, standards of educational institutions, transport and accommodation facilities for students, etc.
Shri Vayalar Ravi also had meetings with the leaders of the Indian community, various Associations and Indian diaspora. His visit to Australia is aimed at building up confidence of the Indian community and as a follow up of the assurances of the Australian Government.
Shri Ravi will also be visiting New Zealand for two days to have interactions with the Indian community.
